Sondheim’s Company to Close in July

June 15th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Company, Raúl Esparza, Sondheim, Stephen Sondheim

Well, this is a bummer: The revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical Company is closing on July 1st. (Bummer because it was among the shows I am considering seeing when I am in NY later this summer.)

Company opened on November 29, 2006, and won this year’s awards for Best revival of a Musical in the following presentations: Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critic’s Circle and Drama League Awards.

Raúl Esparza stars as the lead character, Bobby.

The show originally premiered in April of 1970, and was nominated for 14 Tony Award nominations, of which it won six. It won Best Musical then, and Best Revival of a Musical now.

According to press notes: “Long before ‘Sex and the City,’ Company took an unconventional look at love and commitment in a complex modern New York. The show is an honest, funny and sophisticated portrayal of five married couples as seen through the eyes of their mutual friend Robert, a bachelor evaluating the pros and cons of wedded life.”

Catch it while you can!

I saw this show in previews in October, and it’s one of the most stunning things I’ve ever seen in theatre –and I’d seen a production of Company years ago and kind of hated it. Raúl Esparza was amazing - one of the finest singers in the business, surely. If you can’t see the show, get the soundtrack. Crazy that it’s closing!

I saw this on Saturday evening, June 30th, the night before it was to close. The performance I attended was being filmed by multiple cameras. Sondheim vet Lonny Price took to the stage to introduce the cameramen and informed the audience the performance was being recorded to air on PBS’ Great Performances and, ultimately, for DVD sales.
